Zachary Smith Powers is a writer and editor who tells stories about education, advocacy, and culture in the Pacific Northwest. His first book, titled “Absolutely Nobody: Searching for My Uncle and a Generation Lost to AIDS,” will be published in spring 2027 by University of Washington Press. Zachary is also a frequent contributor to The Seattle Times’ Pacific NW Magazine and a recent graduate of the Rainier Writing Workshop, the creative writing MFA program at Pacific Lutheran University.

Zachary’s writing background is primarily in journalism. He previously served as a weekly columnist and feature writer for the Weekly Volcano (Tacoma), and he has contributed features, op-eds, and blog entries to numerous publications throughout the Pacific Northwest, including The Seattle Times, The News Tribune, Pacific NW Magazine, The Anchorage Daily News, South Sound Magazine, Arches Magazine, The Evergreen Magazine, Tacoma Weekly, Post Defiance, Fife Free Press, and The Daily Emerald.

Originally from Anchorage, Zachary lives in Tacoma with his wife and two young children. He is an active member of the Tacoma community, recently serving on the board of the YWCA Pierce County and previously on the City of Tacoma Art Commission and the Metro Parks Tacoma Arts & Heritage Council. In addition to his recently completed MFA, Zach earned a BA in Political Science from Pacific Lutheran University in 2010 and a Master of Public Administration from The Evergreen State College in 2012.
